Navratri is big business. According to reliable estimates, dandiya organisers spend anywhere between Rs 10 million and Rs 20 million (Rs 1 crores and Rs 2 crores) during these nine days. With big bucks and corporate sponsorship, many organisers rope in film stars, which adds to the glamour at these events. For those who like a slice of tradition there are the 'local dandiyas,' normally held in building compounds or in several Jain temples in the city.

Navratri is that time of the year when trends in ethnic fashion and style are set. Numerous designer variations of the ghagra choli and sarees are on display. Traditional intricate mehndi patterns coexist with tattoos. The long pleated hair gives close competition to the short boy cuts. The music also has changed. The traditional dhol and folk music have been overtaken over by live bands wiith their fare of the latest film music and popular remixes. Navratri is the perfect synthesis of tradition and modernity.

Dandiya nights are a participant's delight. Contests and prizes abound, from the best dancing couple, best costume to best music. The urge to put one's best foot forward has given rise to dandiya coaching classes! At these classes professional dancers teach you the garba just as they would the waltz or the macarena.

Since the festival sees thousands of people coming out on the streets, it involves tight security. The Mumbai police are not taking any chances, especially after the August 25 blasts. Strict instructions have been given on when to wind up the dandiya nights. No-noise zones, no loudspeakers after 2200 hours IST, installation of closed circuit cameras are some measures implemented by the police and organisers.

On the first three nights of Navratri, Durga is worshipped. Lakshmi is worshipped on the next three nights, and finally Saraswati on the last three nights. The following day, the tenth day of the festival, is called Vijayadasami, when Lord Rama killed Ravana. Navratri marks the beginning of the festive season for Hindus, which continues till Diwali.
