Older heroines turn up the heat

Bollywood has always been the older man's hunting ground. Frequently grizzled heroes decades past their prime romance actresses old enough to be their grand-neice, and chauvinistically get away with it.

Yet there are times the tide is turned, times when we try to take a leaf out of Mrs Robinson's book and let the leading man be younger than the lady. Here's a quick look at the next such film -- and a few memorable ones over the last decade or so.

Bipasha Basu (29) and Ranbir Kapoor (25) in Bachna Ae Haseenon (2008)

The upcoming Yash Raj Films release is reportedly a remake of Chris O'Donnell starrer The Bachelor, and features Ranbir opposite real-life lover Deepika Padukone and Minissha Lamba as well. Yet the sparks we're waiting to see are the flinty ones likely to fly when the youngster tries to get it on with the steamiest of modern day sirens, Bips, well-capable of chewing up far older men.

Madhuri Dixit (30) and Akshaye Khanna (22) in Mohabbat (1997)

Best known for the utterly random Don't Break My Heart song, this film pitted Dixit opposite the son of Vinod Khanna -- with whom she got up to much steaminess in Dayavan, when she was just 21. Dixit was fit as a fiddle for Khanna Jr too, but while Akshaye hadn't lost his hair just yet, he was miles away from bonafide screen presence.

Sridevi (33) and Shah Rukh Khan (31) in Army (1996)

Sridevi and Khan both only signed on this sloppy film simply because they wanted to work with each other. And while a two-year age difference doesn't seem like much, it was more than significant at the time with the actress on a downslide and the actor being crowned the new king of Hindi filmdom -- post the success of his Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Not that he could save a dud like this film, of course.

Dimple Kapadia (42) and Akshaye Khanna (31) in Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

The most memorably and deftly executed May-December romance in recent Bollywood, this unlikely couple provided this casually different film with its core of emotion and conflict. Both actor and actress were perfectly suited to their parts, and made us long for more stories handled with such natural sensitivity.

Rekha (42) and Akshay Kumar (29) in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996)

Okay, so this was the film that also starred Raveena Tandon -- not to mention The Undertaker -- but both those long-haired individuals were significantly overshadowed by Madame Re skimpily laying the moves on Akki while covered in thick layers of mud. The In The Night, No Control song might have been a slobby Madonna rip-off, but the sizzling Rekha was a complete original. Boy.
