* Check that you are indeed connected to the internet! if you're on DSL or cable, do a simple power cycling routine. shut off the cable/DSL modem and your computer. wait 30 seconds. then FIRST turn your cable/DSL modem on (take note of the lights that flash). depending on the manufacturer of the cable/DSL modem, the lights should indicate that you're online once it's established connection. turn your computer on, then start surfing.

* Check that these programs (those that need to connect to the internet) are allowed by your Windows Firewall (assuming that you're using Microsoft Windows XP SP2);

* If you're using a 3rd-party firewall program, check that these programs have not been blocked by the firewall;

* Make sure that you're not using any proxies (if you're just at home, and not on a network);

* Reset your browser to its default settings... if no go, try installing and using another browser.

If these have been done and you're still not able to go online, something else could be wrong. here are some stuff that you can do:

* Install and update an antivirus program on your computer. make sure you do a FULL system scan!

* Install and update an anti-SPYWARE program on your computer. yessss... there are malicious products that disguise themselves as ordinary programs, but they do actually pose security risks. they're not viruses, but how they work on your computer, well... let's just say that they may allow other people to take over your computer without your knowledge and do nasty things on it, not to mention SPY on you. it's best that you install anti-spyware programs like Ad-Aware, Spy Sweeper, or Spyware Doctor, just to name a few.

If you are actually using a licensed version of Microsoft Windows XP, you need to keep your computer up-to-date by running Windows Update automatically to obtain the latest security patches and product fixes.

Btw, search for "Dial-A-Fix". this is a nifty tool that can do wonders to your computer, too.
