Post  Skirts, the new wardrobe must-have

A wardrobe is not complete without at least a skirt or two.
Even die hard trouser and jeans girls should have a skirt, for variety and a touch of femininity.

They can be long or short depending on your comfort levels.

Trend-wise, knee length A-line skirts (a shape that is narrow at the top and gently flares out at the bottom, following the shape of the letter A) and fitted skirts with a flared hemline, are very hot.

According to Umaima Khorakiwala, a fashion designer who specialises in diffusion designer couture, you should take into account your body type when choosing a skirt

Body type
Girls with broad hips should wear A-line skirts in a bias cut ie the garment is cut at an angle to the warp (horizontal yarns) and weft (vertical yarns) of a fabric. Avoid broad waistbands and pencil skirts.
Skinny girls should wear fuller skirts like a bubble skirt (a voluminous skirt, somewhat resembling a balloon), and avoid pencil skirts and anything, which clings to the body.

Saddled with a paunch? Wear skirts with embroidery on the hem as it takes attention away from the waist. Also team it up with a plunging V-neckline as it makes the torso look slimmer.

Short chicas can choose from monochromatic (single) colours, which give an illusion of height. A-line skirts, which are fitted at the hips, can also make short girls look taller. If one is wearing a belt, it should ideally be of the same colour as the skirt.

Skirts for a formal do

Pick skirts in flowy fabrics like georgettes, crepes and soft silk.
You could also wear layers, panels or skirts that are fitted at the hips and flare out at the hem.

Embroidered hems or waist belts are also ideal for a formal do. Look for lace trimmings as the feminine look is very in.

As for length, a little below the knee or calf length looks good. For a dressy look, opt for floor length skirts, which are fitted at the hips.

Skirts for fun

Casual fabrics like cottons, linens and handloom fabrics work well, lending a semi formal look.
Knee and calf lengths give a casual and chic look. A-lines and bubble skirts look great to.

For holidays, experiment with bold prints, short lengths and wraparound skirts in fun colours like aqua, fuschia, tie and dye etc.
